Mentors

ARTIST MENTORS FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS
RI LEARNING ARTS NETWORK

Website: RILAN

Many openings for volunteer (unpaid) artist mentors
Starting with incoming freshmen in Fall 2004, high school graduation requirements in Rhode Island will include a profeciency in the arts. Many people including artists of all kinds will be needed to support the effort in many new ways. One area of opportunity is in the area of mentoring senior high school students who are undertaking senior projects in the arts and need guidance.

Why are mentors so vital? As part of the field experience of a student who is learning to research and apply what they have been studying, mentors are key ingredients in real world education and community building of a young person. They help the student to push his/her limits. They are figures of encouragement and guidance. Mentors are asked to share their knowledge, to stimulate thinking, indicate possible leads in resources, and may include the teaching of certain skills or approaches. The mentor must be committed to helping a young person overcome the difficulties he/she may reasonably encounter in pursuing the project and research. The mentor does not do the project for the student.

The projects vary widely, according to the particular interest of the student. Projects may range from creating a video on a topic of interest to the student, to organizing an elementary orchestra performance to creating and publishing a graphic novel to composing an original piece of music and wanting to hear it performed by adult musicians as it is written. As all school districts phase in graduation requirements beginning next year, the need for community support for senior projects will increase statewide. RISCA hopes to act as a clearinghouse for artists willing to help as mentors.

Helping a young person at this crucial time in their education only takes a commitment of about 10-15 hours over a period of about 10 weeks. If you are interested, please send your name, address, phone number, and area(s) of expertise to Greg Rubano at grujake@cs.com, or call him at 231-6559. Put 'interested community mentor' in your subject line or voice mail message.

It takes a village to help ensure access to the arts for all our young citizens!
