Rhode Island College is passionate about the arts and their committment shows in the high quality artists they bring to the state. Throughout the years they have showcased almost all the big dance companies and many of the up and comers. The 2008/2009 season features dance as The Song and Dance Ensemble of West Africa (African dance), Compania Flamenco Jose Porcel (flamenco), Off the Beaten Path (tap), and Complexions (ballet). The related art of acrobatics is represented by The National Acrobats of China.

Traditional rhythms, instruments, folklore and mythology of West African nations paint a colorful and exciting picture of the oral and musical rites of these diverse peoples. This exciting ensemble of musicians, singers and dancers will perform traditional Malian music mainly from Peuhl, Bambara and Mandingo. While the style is West African authentic, a modern edge makes them as hip as any international big band.

This company of dancers and musicians is celebrated throughout the world as the greatest export of the new flamenco. From Seville, Spain, the fiery José Porcel brings his company to RIC with an explosion of dance, music, and passion deeply bound to the Gypsy spirit as evidenced by spectacular costumes and passionate expression. Porcel and his troupe offer irresistible sex appeal and irrepressible energy.

Back by popular demand following their 2005 and 2006 sold-out concerts, the 25-member Soweto Gospel Choir is an awe-inspiring vocal ensemble. The choir will perform in eight different languages in an inspirational program of tribal, traditional and popular African gospel featuring holiday music from around the world. Earthy rhythms, rich harmonies, a capella and charismatic performances combine to uplift the soul and express South Africa's great hopes for the future.

Off the Beaten Path was created under the direction of award-winning choreographer Drika Overton and composer Paul Arslanian, in collaboration with renowned tap dancers Brenda Bufalino and Josh Hilberman. Inspired by the nature writings of Rachel Carson, pioneer of the modern environmental movement, the performance presents an artist's vision of our human connection to the natural world by weaving together music and dance from around the world. Born in Seoul, Korea, and educated at Juilliard School in New York City, sisters Maria, Lucia and Angella are redefining the art and architecture of chamber music. The three breathe new life into the standard piano-trio literature and push the boundaries of their craft, commissioning works from visionary composers like Kenji Bunch, Maurice Jarre and Michael Nyman.
