of Artist Alliance

Born in the Azores, Nelia Lawton(formerly Paris)came to Rhode Island at the age of nine and began her performing career shortly thereafter. As a child, she discovered her love of the stage dancing tap, jazz, and ballet in school recitals. One of many ballroom dance teachers, who learned their craft from the Rhode Island Arthur Murray Dance Studio franchised by George Lawton, Nelia started ballroom dancing in 1985. With her background in ballet, she progressed swiftly, and in 1987, she moved to Florida where she was the artistic director for a dance studio. She returned to the RI Arthur Murray's where she worked until starting The Paris Dance Academy in Taunton Massachusetts in 1992.

After the birth of her second son, she took a break from running studios to decide where she wanted to go with her dancing. This resulted in her studying the relationship between dance and music especially jazz and tap with Billy Seigenfeld (Artistic Director of the Jump Rhythm Jazz Project) and his partner and Assistant Director Jeanie Hill in New York City. She continued to train in Ballroom with Latin Dance Champions Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin and ballroom champion Eddie Simon. In addition she studied ballet in New York City with Carol Roux, and theatrical dance at the Broadway Dance Center. This training culminated in her founding The Providence Theatrical Ballroom and Jazz Project (PB&J), a Rhode Island based dance company dedicated to performance ballroom dancing, and the creation of SummerBall a formal ballroom dance for the purpose of bringing together the ballroom dance community and displaying the talents of The Project. Under the auspices of The Project, Nelia teaches a varied combination of dances in downtown Providence at Providence Ballet and Groundwerx and in Barrington.

Along with high school senior Xachem Khamsyvoravong, in early 2002, she founded the Barrington High School Dance Club - Rhode Island's first public high school to have its own ballroom dance club. By then end of January 2002, the club had more than 50 members.

Dancer, Teacher
Ballroom, Swing, Country (wRI)
A national competitor and member of DTCB, Jennifer Lyons has been dancing since her teens, and teaching locally in Rhode Island/Massachusetts for over ten years. Swing, Latin, Ballroom and Country partner dancing are the core of her weekly group classes. She is well known in the social dance community, and holds a reputation for instruction with a finesse to get all to dance quickly with oodles of fun along the way. She teaches at Healthtrax at the Care New England Wellness Center.

Just like a storybook, Jennifer's dance life started with men sweeping her around the floor with her little feet on their shoes. Of course all of this attention and the feeling like she could really dance was a dream come true! Her parents took Jennifer ballroom dancing weekly, where she got asked to dance beginning at the age of 7. Week after week Jennifer happily hopped on everyone's feet for the dance ride of her life! Before too long, she knew the name of every Ballroom and Latin dance, could recognized the beat and name the style of dance, and knew how to count all of the different timings for each dance.

In her teens, although Jennifer never had a speaking role in the 15 plays her high school produced, she was a first pick dancer for her drama company in every play. At the age of 16, Jennifer started country line dancing with her Mom, and quickly established a dance partnership with the line dance instructor. Soon after they danced competitively in the country circuit Division IV.

Still 16, Jennifer remembers going to a Ballroom studio dance party and was the Bell of the Ball! Again, no formal training, Jennifer never kept a chair warm all night. After 2 years straight of teacher training at 10 hours per week, Jennifer began teaching at the age of 18. After completing her studies in cosmetology and working full time as a hairdresser, she was also working for an independent local dance studio part time. After 8 years of committed dance, performances, student showcases and continued education at the studio, Jennifer now runs her own show independently out of Healthtrax, East Providence, Rhode Island.

Jennifer is a National Champion Award Winner winning twenty 1st place awards in her recent months. As a full time seasoned dance professional of over 11 years, Jennifer also traveling weekends for competitions, judging, and teaching dance workshops around the USA. Her expertise includes Ballroom, Latin, Country, Hustle, and her favorite style of dance, West Coast Swing. Her recent wins include:
1st place Invitational West Coast Swing Jack & Jill in Indianapolis, 1st place in advanced Hustle Jack & Jill and 1st place in Rising Star Classic Routine doing West Coast Swing at Swing Fling, 2nd place Champions WCS Jack & Jill Boston Tea Party with Robert Royston, 3rd place Champions WCS Strictly Swing Boston Tea Party with Angel Figueroa

For those that know Jennifer personally or professionally, they say that teaching is a gift and Jennifer has the gift to teach. If you have ever seen Jennifer dance socially, dance competitively, or teach any form of dance, her passion for dancing pours out of every inch of her body. She is enjoyed by all, and cares more for her students than can be imagined. Jennifer helps each student find what makes him or her come alive on the dance floor. Jennifer's passion clearly comes from teaching and dancing and she surely did not miss her calling!
