WHY THE YOUNG DON'T DANCE

This from an article about the slow demise of polka in the rural west - "It's our generation's fault...When we were growing up, our parents would take us to the dances. We'd fall asleep on the side of the stage, or in the booths. But then when our generation grew up, we got baby sitters." It does seem as though now social dancing is for adults unencumbered of child for an evening. The Hispanic culture has a tradition of bringing even the babies to dances with the result that by the time their children hit puberty, they are passable to good dancers. Maybe it's time for all dancing parents to start bringing the young ones so they can learn early rather than too late. Spread the wealth! WILL DANCING WITH THE STARS DO IT AGAIN?

The fourth season of Dancing With The Stars will kick off ABC's premiere week with three nights of DWTS programming - Monday, September 24, 8pm; Tuesday, September 25, 8pm (90 minutes) and Wednesday, September 26, 8pm (special night). Not only is this overkill - only the most fanatic ballroom dancer is interested in all ballroom all the time - but their regular Monday night slot is opposite the phenomenally popular Heroes. Keeping to their casting tradition, the producers have cast some sport figures, singers, less well known actors & actresses and a a few really well known older personalities - Wayne Newton, Jane Seymour and Marie Osmond. Except for Jane Seymour the contestants look pretty drab, but DWTS has the amazing ability to show the real people behind the airbrushed exteriors, and of course, The real stars are the dance teachers. The show would be blah without Cheryl Burke, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Edyta Sliwinska, Tony Dovolani and the rest of the talented group. It's no wonder that many people now vote for the teacher instead of the contestants.

TOO MUCH DANCE?

Is television going to kill the golden dance egg? How much dance can the viewing audience stand? ABC is getting ready to run a three city audition to gather dancers for their newest dance show, which will feature Dancing With The Stars judges, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba. Bruno and Carrie Ann will be the choroegraphers for teams that compete against each other in the U.S. version of Dance X, a hit on British television this summer, which included Bruno as one of the original choreographers. ABC plans to air the show starting in January 2008. [ABC orders Bruno Tonioli/Carrie Ann Inaba 'Dance X' reality series by Christopher Rocchio Realty TV World 7/19/07]

JULY 2007

JULY 29
CLUB SALSA REPLACED BY STUDIO SALSA?

The history of salsa follows a similar trajectory to that of many other dances. New dance created from new music and old dance by dance pioneers. They dance it as their own. Other people notice and start to learn the dance. The dance pioneers become peeved that many people are dancing 'their' dance and wander off to discover something else. They are dance snobs, but they are also dance innovators. Dancers owe them respect and honor for their creativity, but that shouldn't stop anyone from dancing. [Salsa Spins Beyond Its Roots by Julie Bloom NYT 7/29/07]

NARRAGANSETT TOWERS SUMMER DANCES

The Towers dance schedule for 2007 is now up on riDance. Scheduled are some wonderful local bands including Roger Cerisi's All Starz, Eight To The Bar, Roomful of Blues, The Slippery Sneakers and Duke Robillard (although a couple summers ago, the Duke let the dancers down with a mostly jazz set); out of town favorites such as Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys and the newly reconstituted Squirrel Nut Zippers (!) plus some new comers such as The Wilders and Bio Ritmo. The Towers doesn't bother with 'same old' so expect the quirky with the good (of course there's quirky and good). The riDance schedule has links to the bands and most of their websites offer at least musical excerpts if not a whole song. [The Towers Summer Schedule]

JUNE 1
BALLROOM DANCERS HAVE A BUSY WEEKEND

With two dances tonight and three dances on Friday, RI ballroom dancers don't have to travel far to get their feet on the floor.

Friday night has USA Dance at the Dillon Council in North Providence and most of the high level dancers will be there so the PB&J dance in Barrington will have plenty of room and less fast movers making it the best choice for beginner and early intermediate dancers.

Saturday night has DJ's Kathy and Randy hosting their dance in North Providence, which should drain some of the crowd from K&S in Cranston. K&S will feature Greg Duda teaching the Paso Doble from 7 to 8pm so not only will there be room on the dance floor, but you can get in a lesson on a rarely taught dance.

The new kid on the block East Greenwich's RIDanceSport will also have a Saturday dance. In case you haven't tried this venue, owner Efrosyni has crafted an absolutely wonderful hugh wood dance floor. Efrosyni has obviously studied How to Lay Out a Buffet 101 from K&S's Kathy Soscia so there's a great buffet with cookies, pastries, fresh fruit and vegetables, coffee and on and on plus pizza arrives piping hot around 10pm. If you are bringing someone to dance with, try this location before the crowds find it. At this point, there aren't enough singles to form a happy dance community so K&S remains the ballroom dance of choice for the non-coupled.

HEATHER ISNT THE ONLY ONE LEGGED BALLROOM DANCER

Other than the obvious, there are a few differences between George Velazquez and Heather Mills. Dance teacher and performer, George Velaquez lost his leg long after he had learned to dance tap & ballroom and had become a dance teacher so he had a head star. Heather Mills is learning to dance on Dancing With The Stars, after the fact and in front of an audience - a much more difficult feat. But George lost his entire leg and Heather has her leg to below the knee so there's no way to really factor who's got it harder. An article about George Velaquez ran in the April 3rd Lifebeat section of Pro Jo, but to see the original (more detailed with no signin required) see Ballroom instructor doesn't let loss of leg stop him by Rodney Ho Access Atlanta 3/26/2007 and for more on this story, Dance Notes has an interview with George at George Velazquez Certainly Can...And He Does!

DECISIONS DECISIONS

What's a swing dancer to do? On Friday March 2 two great swing dances will take place. In Providence, The Zoot Suit Ball is free and has Boston's Compaq Big Band while over in Pawtucket there's a swing benefit to save that historic dance hall - The German Club (see below). Use it or lose it as they say. Since the venues are only a few miles apart, why not go to both?

FEBRUARY 2007

FEBRUARY 27
PUT ON YOUR DANCING SHOES AND COME SAVE THE GERMAN CLUB

You've all danced there. It's one of the largest 1930's style dance halls around. Most places don't really want dancers because they don't drink enough, but The German Club has been throwing its doors wide open for swing, cajun, square dance, ballroom, you name it. Now the club needs your help. The fire marshall has ordered a complete sprinker system for the club and costs will exceed $50,000. You can help keep their wonderful dance floor in service by coming to a swing dance on March 2 where your money will go directly to defraying the sprinkler installation. DJ's Rockabilly Guy and Swing Daddy will keep you happy and on the floor so this deal is win win. [Details]

If you can't come, but would like to help save this historic dance floor, please make a check out to 'The German American Cultural Society' and mail to The German Club, 78 Carter Ave, Pawtucket RI 02861.

We look forward to all of you making it safely and wisely.
